Key measures of hypoxia tolerance in simulations. Production of key ratios for hypoxia tolerance at a common O2 uptake rate (4.8 nmol/min/mg protein). Naïve flies have lower proton/ATP and substrate/ATP ratios than adapted flies at any given oxygen supply (p < 0.05 for all comparisons of adapted versus the two naïve control groups, and p < 0.05 for differences in H+/ATP ratio between the two controls). Error bars indicate standard deviation of 100 simulations incorporating the variances of NMR measurements. H+ stands for proton accumulation. For simplicity, data are shown for males only.
