The average expression profiles for the three small sets of distinctive expression profiles (a) genes whose transcripts are transiently increased during exponential growth (b) genes whose transcripts are transiently decreased during exponential growth and (c) genes whose transcripts are transiently increased during the transition between exponential and stationary phases are plotted for one of the three datasets. This shows that sequential regulation of physiological processes occurs during growth and in the transition to stationary phase.
