Model development processes. (A) Establishment of the network structure and straightforward model development. Within three main steps, the ab initiomodel is iteratively expanded and refined by means of experimental data and statistical (hypothesis) testing. Subsequent model predictions again serve for data-based model validation and statistical model selection.
