Competing models. The two direct causal models explaining the existence of significant mutual information between E1 and E2. These local models are interpreted as causal networks and as Bayesian networks via the Causal Markov Condition. V represents any hidden variables, such as methyltransferases, that may affect both M1 and M2. For each pair of genes with a putative edge, one of these models is selected using a likelihood ratio test.
