Response when affinities are varied. This figure shows how the steady state spatial distributions of the complexes AX and BX change with the relative affinities of A and B for X. In a) and b), both A and AX are the only diffusible components, while X is locally produced. In c) and d), only A is diffusible, while X is locally produced. It is seen that increasing the binding affinity of a particular complex increases its concentration, and that this effect is most significant for the nondiffusible complex, BX, which exhibits a more pronounced spatial variation.
