Five "building blocks", each representing areas of biology known to be important for regulating lung cell proliferation, were used as a conceptual guide to construct the network. The Cell Cycle, containing the signaling elements most proximal to driving entry/exit from a proliferative state, was the central block, while connections from four other peripheral building blocks (Growth Factors, Cell Interaction, Epigenetics and Intra- and Extracellular (IC/EC) Signaling) to the Cell Cycle block were also used to construct the network. Due to the size and complexity of the IC/EC block, it was further divided into 11 sub-networks, each focused on a distinct area of cellular signaling related to regulating lung cell proliferation.Back to article page
