Polytomy identification. Part I presents a three-level bifurcation subtree with 4 genome taxa A, B, C and D. X 1 , X 2 and X 3 are genome distances calculated among A, B and C. And S 1 , S 2 , S 3 , S 4 and S 5 are branch lengths. If bifurcating subtree of A, B and C is identified as a polytomy, then the sub-tree can be converted to a multifurcation subtree, shown as Part II.
