Horizontal lines and boxes represent the median and interquartile range of the distribution, whiskers show up to 1.5 times the interquartile range, and points represent samples beyond that. Note that parameter values are shown on a natural log scale. (B). Corresponding dose–response curves showing the relationship between the level of selenium and the mutation rate predicted by the selenium model for each set of parameters. All parameter sets are designed to produce the same mutation rate at the baseline level of selenium (1.7 mM). Curves are colored according to the outcome of trials simulated with that parameter set: grey curves correspond to insignificant results, red to harmful results, and blue to beneficial results.
