Comparison of distributions of parameter sets inducing frequent switching to parameter sets with rare switching. Stochastic simulations were performed as described in Fig. 5. The distributions of two parameter sets were compared: those with a high probability of switching \(\mathcal {P}\geq 0.9\) in both directions (blue, 21 parameter sets) and those with a low probability of switching \(\mathcal {P}\leq 0.1\) (red, 77 parameter sets), as indicated by red boxes in Fig. 5 a. A Wilcoxon ranksum test was applied for detecting significant differences at a significance level p≤0.001. The parameters exhibiting no significant differences between the two sets are not shown
